Expenses are provided to MPs to refund the costs incurred by them. I work hard to provide a good and efficient public service to my constituents.

My expenses cover the costs of running two busy offices, a small rented one bedroom flat in London, and travel costs including standard class travel between my constituency home and Westminster, using off peak tickets wherever possible. I claim nothing for food and drink for myself.

I am very aware of the concerns that the public have regarding MP's expenses. I watched as a member of the public in 2009 when the expenses scandal unfolded. That is why I welcomed the introduction of the current system which sees all claims are thoroughly checked and verified against receipts by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority. There are strict rules and overall budgets for each category and these are all published online.

As this refund comes from public funds it is right that my constituents have full access to the details of how it is being spent. That is why I welcomed the introduction of the current system which sees all MPs expenses published online at www.parliamentarystandards.org.uk for any of my constituents to see.

If you are a resident of the Redcar constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
