Swales slams council for taking money from the poorest children in Redcar and Cleveland
Local MP Ian Swales, has today expressed concern at the news that Labour run Redcar and Cleveland Council have decided to charge schools £10.00 for every child that receives free school meals.
Ian is calling on the council to reconsider their decision to impose an administration charge of £10.00 per child for free school meals.
They claim that this will not have a detrimental effect on schools because of the extra money being provided under the new pupil premium. Ian believes that the Council have misunderstood the purpose of this extra income for pupils.
Ian said ''the extra £430.00 per child that the pupil premium provides is allocated to schools, for the education of children''
''This decision will have a detrimental effect on all schools in the borough where free school meals take up is high. It is meant to go directly to the schools for the education of the poorest children in our communities.''
''This was a Liberal Democrat policy, implemented by the Government to ensure that all our children get a fairer start in life. It was never intended that a slice should be siphoned off for council administration. I have written to the council and I will continue to fight to allow schools to have the full freedom on how to spend their money.''
