Redcar MP Ian Swales has today called on the Environment Agency to take more action on the pungent and unpleasant odour from the Ensus plant. Local people are still suffering the effects and at the moment it appears that there will be no quick resolution. Ian attended a meeting attended by community leaders, Ensus and the Environment Agency on Wednesday 11th August and expressed his opinion on the matter openly.
Ian Swales today said that ''It is for the Environment Agency to police this matter and it is for them to act accordingly. They have had the opportunity to do this and appear not to have taken this opportunity, even though I have been pushing for a decision. I am writing to the Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Caroline Spelman MP to ask for an explanation of the Environment Agency's actions in this case.''
''It has been clear for many weeks that the Environment Agency have been indecisive in the face of an unprecedented and unpleasant situation for residents on Teesside. The Environment Agency know that I am dissatisfied with the time that it has taken to get this far, and with their response to the people of Teesside.''
''It is unacceptable that the local residents are expected to live with this odour for an indeterminate amount of time whilst the Environment Agency do not use their powers to resolve this. It is time to get this situation sorted once and for all.''
