The Declaration, a statement of allegiance to Yorkshire and its three Ridings, is read every year, on Yorkshire Day (1st August) at Redcar town clock, it is read at a time that coincides with the number of years since the first record reference to the Ridings, in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles of 876. Thus year it was 11:35 am; next year it will be 11:36 am.
Ian, a member of the Yorkshire Ridings Society, who organise the event said: "The Society work hard to make Yorkshire Day a success every year organising events for all the family. In addition we sell silk white roses and all the proceeds go to local charities. For the past few years this has been Redcar Lifeboat and we have had the Redcar Ladies Lifeboat Guild help us. We raised the excellent total £468 this year, but over the years we have raised thousands of pounds for local charities."
The Mighty Viking, Sicga Drauglin, played by Corus steelworker John Curr, delivered the Declaration in Old Norse whilst Ian read it in Modern English. The Ridings Society also has an Old English version and a Latin version. These are the four languages used in our area since 876.
