Redcar MP Ian Swales is pressing Ensus and the Environment Agency to make public statements about the noxious emissions coming from the new Ensus biofuels plant at Wilton. After starting up in February the company stopped production at the end of June and raised the height of a stack during July in an attempt to rectify the problem. However this change appears to have made little difference for local residents.
Ian Swales said, "For the last few months I have been inundated with complaints about the emissions from Ensus. I have been working closely with the Ensus management and the Environment Agency and there was a clearly a design fault in the new plant''
''The plant sits right in the middle of my constituency which covers over 90,000 residents and I have had complaints come in from all areas. Due to its proximity to the plant, the village of Lazenby suffers the worst problems, for example children at the local school have been unable to play outside on some days. However the whole area is badly affected depending on which way the wind is blowing.''
''Now that it's clear that the latest fix has not worked, I am calling on the company and the Environment Agency to use the media to communicate with all affected residents. The situation is unacceptable and we want to know what the company is doing, how long we have to put with these fumes and what action the Environment Agency is taking.''
''Local people welcome industry and investment but not at any price. We want good neighbours who will take care of our local environment.''
