Redcar's MP Ian Swales has reacted with both relief and delight at the council's decision to allow St. Peter's Catholic College to remain open.
St. Peter's in South Bank was due to close as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme and merge with Sacred Heart School in Redcar, but when the new Coalition Government announced the end of the BSF funding, there were concerns that the council would still close this school regardless.
There has been a lot of pressure on the council to keep the school open, with parents, teachers, pupils, and the wider community asking for their opinions to be listened to, with many of them writing to their MP with their concerns.
Ian made the school closure issue one of his top priorities when he was first elected, meeting with the headteachers of all the schools threatened with closure.
Ian said, "I am absolutely delighted that St. Peter's will stay open and serve the local community. It is an outstanding school that has had great successes over the years and has been a huge part of the community for a long time. This news now means that the school can continue to be part of its local community and continue its good work."
